Fresh Veggie Bag Supplies

Anyone who follows my Instagram account knows that once I week my Husband meets me at the train station with a big bag of fresh produce.  There are so many options crammed into those bags and with a few supplies the fresh veggie bag can create kitchen magic.

Where does he get this bag of wonders you ask? For our anniversary this year, he bought us a share in an urban garden organization. This means that every Thursday he goes and fills our bag with fruit, vegetables and herbs fresh from the garden beds. Produce does not get any more fresh than this other than the stuff that comes right out of my garden.  The best and most obvious way to enjoy fresh veggies is to dive right into the bag and start eating.  This explains why Thursday nights have become salad night in the Gilded Sprout house.  We just grab bowls and knives and eat as much as we can straight from the sac. There are of course things left over and bits that need a little more work and so with a few kitchen supplies, you can make sure that you don’t waste a single part of the vegetables and create some great food for your family at the same time.  This principle holds true for all farmers market trips and even every day grocery store produce isles.  Think about what you can use right away, what you can store and what you can get creative with.

These are my favourite kitchen gadgets for a pile of fresh veggies straight from the garden!

Mikasa Daylight Salad Bowl • Mikasa • $127.99  – So this is not the cheapest salad bowl on the market but I have a favourite one in my kitchen that I reach to for salad night.  Fid a big bowl that you love and you will love eating even the most simple salad out of it.
Koolatron Total Chef Deluxe 5-Tray Food Dehydrator • $94.99 – When you have extra fruits and veggies dehydrating is a great option.  You can make fruit leathers or veggie chips. I will admit that I have a cheap one in my kitchen and it is working well for me.
Skruba Fabrikators Veggie Skrub’a® Gloves, One Pair • Sur La Table • $12.95 – Sometimes you didn’t need something until you had it and some people just love gadgets.  Peeling vegetables removes a lot of the nutrients and so these scrub gloves help get off stuck on dirt without the need to peel. They also exfoliate your hands at the same time!
GEFU Julienne Peeler STRISCIA • $19.95 – Have a little fun and create some fun shapes.  This little julienne peeler makes salad rolls a breeze.
Ecolution™ Elements Green 8-Quart Stock Pot • Bed Bath & Beyond • $39.99 – I throw all of the vegetable tops and ends into a bag and throw it into the freezer.  When the bag is full, I make stock.  A good stock pot is a necessity when you are wasting nothing.

Now Designs Produce Bags, Garlic • Now Designs • $9.95  and Now Designs Produce Bags, Ginger • Now Designs • $9.95 I am a sucker for cute bags and these ginger and garlic bags are too cute.

Sterilite 16249006 Medium Black Ultra Basket with Titanium Inserts, 6-Pack • $19.99 – When you take the veggies out of the bag make sure to give them plenty of breathing room in the fridge.  These cheap little baskets are great for dividing and storing your veg.
Full Circle Bamboo Vegetable Brush • Full Circle • $8 – A cute brush makes a good addition to your supply drawer.
Chef’n Tomato Corer • Chef’N • $9.99 – Again with the gadgets! This little tomato corer is good for a bit of a laugh and you can bring it out every now and again for fun. Can you use a knife? Sure but what is the fun in that?

Check out the urban gardens and farmers markets in your area and get eating!

The Perfect Taco

The Perfect Taco

There a few things in this world that set my heart a flutter but one of those is a killer vegetarian taco. They can be simple, they can be complicated, they can be messy or they can be clean but they are always amazing! Every few months when our Mexican cupboard begins to get sparse,… Continue Reading

Smokey Hummus

Smokey Hummus

It was a mere 18 months ago that if you were to meet me on the street and offer me hummus, I would have given you a definite but polite “no thank you” and moved along.   I would most likely have questioned why you were giving away free hummus on the street but that… Continue Reading

Beet Kraut

Beet Kraut

The holidays are coming which means that colours are getting vibrant and the food richer.  Why settle for pedestrian fermented condiments when you can take it to a new level?   This is going to surprise many of you, but even I get tired of the same old sauerkraut.  To be fair, I put it on… Continue Reading
